The Viking 1 orbiter spacecraft was launched 20 August 20 1975, and arrived at Mars on 19 June 1976. Viking 2 was launched 9 September 1975 and arrived at Mars 7 August 1976. Each spacecraft carried a lander. After the primary lander missions were completed, the orbiters used three remote sensing experiments to systematically mapped the entire surface of Mars. Both orbiters also observed Phobos and Deimos.
